Form III enjoy French

This term, Form 3 have been learning songs and playing games with a little French clown called Zozo, who travels in a hot air balloon with Moustique, his cat, and Fleur, the flower who sits in his hat.

On Thursday May 22nd, the children proudly performed ‘Zozo’s French Party’ for an invited audience of parents and grandparents.  They had learned their parts well, and performed with confidence and enthusiasm. It was a lot of fun for everyone!

Form III in action

Literacy

Form III have been acting out the myth about Polyphemus, Odysseus and Poseidon. They acted out the parts of all the characters. When they had done this, we talked about all the feelings and actions of the characters. We improvised with costume! Poseidon held a metre stick instead of a trident and Odysseus wore a school cap. The children had a wonderful time and then were able to write a sequel to the myth.

These two girls are very enthusiastic about literacy and love writing stories together. They have recently written a story entitled ‘Orange’ which they sent to Jacqueline Wilson - a very well-known author. Here they are, very excited, with a postcard from Jacqueline Wilson who loved their story and was full of encouragement for their writing. We may have two famous authors in the making!

 Numeracy

Here are Form III hard at work with a numeracy assessment. We like assessments as they recognise our hard work and achievement and also show us what we need to do better.

Here is one of our boys showing the class his electric colour wheel. He made the wheel by attaching a battery box to a battery using positive and negative wiring. The two discs of colour used all the colours of the rainbow but when spun the colour appeared bluey grey. Do you know why this was?

Science

We have been looking at different types of rocks and soils. One of the boys ‘made’ a volcano! Here he is making it erupt using bicarbonate of soda, vinegar, washing up liquid and food colouring. We think it’s pretty impressive.

 History

Form III made a whole fleet of Viking longships. Here are three very proud designers with their work.

Form III enjoy gardening

Children from Form III made the most of the lovely sunshine to help Mr Kirkham plant comfrey, marjoram and parsley in our herb bed.

They also had a look in the pond and found some frogs’ spawn - looking forward to lots of lively, little, leaping frogs!

Form III study ‘Teeth & Eating’

Dr Zaman came to our Science lesson. We are studying ‘Teeth and Eating’.

He explained what all our teeth are for and how important it is for us to keep our teeth and mouth very clean. Sharks grow other teeth if their teeth fall out but we only have two sets so must be very careful.

After the lesson Dr Zaman gave us all toothbrushes and small tubes of toothpaste. It was really interesting and the presents were lovely!

Form III plant seeds

Form III have been studying the unit ‘Helping plants grow well’ in their science lessons.
We sowed some wild flower seeds. When they had grown, we planted them in a corner of the field which has been left to grow naturally so it looks like a small meadow.
The flowers should attract bees, butterflies and other insects.
The children are learning about the importance of developing and respecting the local natural environment.

Form III study shadows

Form III are studying Light and Shadows as part of their science work.

They used some simple equipment to record the ‘movement’ of the sun around the sky in order to make sun dials.

They discovered that shadows change in position and length throughout the day.

Egyptian artefacts

One of our Year 3 children brought these Egyptian artefacts into school to show to the rest of the class. The picture is painted onto papyrus which is made from reeds that have been woven together and pressed. From papyrus we get the word ‘paper’.

Form III grow stalactites

Stalactites and stalagmites are stone formations found in some limestone caves.
Stalactites hang from the walls or roof and stalagmites grow up from the floor, sometimes they join to make a column.
This process takes thousands of years.

Form III have grown their own stalactite as part of their science topic on rocks and soils.
They dissolved washing soda crystals in hot water. Two beakers  were then filled with the solution and a piece of string was put between them to act as a wick. The stalactite took about 3 days to form.

Form III make sandwiches.

In Design Technology Form III have designed and made their own healthy sandwiches.

‘Yummy! I’m sure it tastes better because I made it myself!’

Anglo Saxons

The Anglo-Saxons lived in primitive ‘wattle and daub’ houses which were built from wood and mud from the forests near their villages. The houses did not have windows but they did have ’smoke holes’ which allowed the smoke from the open fire to pass out of the houses. The ordinary people lived in small houses, whereas the thane lived in the great hall. Strong fences were built around the villages to keep out wild animals and enemy tribes, keeping their own animals and people safe.

Form III have made a village from paper and card as part of their history work on Anglo-Saxons. It has helped the children to gain an insight into life at the time and to provide a backdrop for the story of Beowolf which they have been working on in Literacy lessons.
