Middle IV’s trip to Bradford Industrial Museum

This term, Middle IV children have been learning about what life was like for children in Victorian times.  So, on 17th November, we hired a time machine (actually a Twin Valley coach) to take us back in time to Moorside Board School  – the Victorian classroom, recreated on the third floor of the Victorian mill which houses Bradford Industrial Museum.

The children were dressed as poor Victorians and experienced what lessons and attitudes were like in the late nineteenth century.  They were left in no doubt that children were to be ‘seen and not heard’, and that it would be sinful for them to aspire to improve their wretched lot in life.

As ‘half timers’, the real pupils of Moorside Board School would have worked half of each very long day in the textile mill, as well as attending school!

After lunch, we saw some of the working machinery in the weaving shed and tried to imagine what it must have been like when the room was full of clattering looms and dust, and the overseer was lurking to beat exhausted children.

Finally, we visited the workers’ back to back cottages and compared them with the opulence of the mill owner’s splendid house.

As always, this was a highly enjoyable trip and a very valuable learning experience.

Sophia’s Tree

You may recently have noticed a newly planted sapling at the front of school.  This little magnolia tree was planted on 4th October in memory of Sophia Forrester, a former pupil of The Gleddings, who died earlier this year at the tragically young age of nineteen. Sophia’s mother, older sister, Natasha, and other members of her family joined us, along with some of her many friends, in a simple ceremony when we remembered all that Sophia meant to us and gave thanks for her life.

Sophia was a lovely girl who is remembered very fondly by all those at The Gleddings who knew her.  She was talented in many areas, but had a particular gift for languages, and was nearing the end of her first year studying languages at Leeds University when she died.  At the age of seven, she was Mrs Berry’s first ‘Zozo’ in Form III’s French production, and this year at Sports’ Day we awarded the Sophia Forrester Cup for French to Ellie Hayward.

Clubs

Here are photographs of some of the exciting clubs taking place this term.

Cricket is once more proving popular with both younger and older members of the school.

There are some very keen girls taking part in football on a Monday evening. UIV girls in particular are making great progress in this sport.

Activity Service is proving again to be very interesting for the children.  In the photograph they are discovering the many methods of sleeping outdoors.

Miss Angela remains very busy with the tap and jazz groups.

Pottery is very popular once again this term. The children are hard at work making their newest creation.

MIV learn about life in Victorian times

The children in Middle IV have been discussing the different ways by which they can learn about what life was like for children in Victorian times.

In these photographs they are working hard, using books, paintings, photographs, cartoons and historical documents to learn about the working conditions of poor children in early Victorian England.  Next week, each group of children will present their findings to the rest of the class.

Success in Junior Language Challenge

Congratulations to Upper IV pupil, Ruqaiyya Azeb, who has reached the national finals of The Junior Language Challenge.  She and five of her hard-working classmates – Freya Atkinson, Oliver Fleming, Jasmine Greenwood, Carmen Lau and Ruby O’Hare – reached the regional semi-final stage of the competition, which was held at Lidget Green Primary Schoolin Bradford, on Tuesday 27th September.  Their knowledge of Portuguese, learned through computer games, gained them their semi-final places; but the semi final tested their skill in Kazakh, which they had to learn during their summer holiday.

Ruqaiyya now faces the further challenge of having to impress the judges in London with her knowledge of Luganda (one of the languages spoken inUganda), as she represents Yorkshire in the capital.

Well done, Ruqaiyya!  Good luck in the final stage of the competition!

European Day of Languages

On Monday 26th September, we enjoyed our annual celebration of The European Day of Languages.  In a special assembly, Year 5 children led the singing of a lively song in Mandarin about colours, whilst Year 6 pupils demonstrated a playground game in French, which had been taught to them by visitors from our twin school, L’Ecole du Sacre Coeur in Meyzieu, near Lyon, in France.

Delicious homemade Viennese biscuits were enjoyed at playtime, and Chef Lizzie took her inspiration from Italy for lunch.

Throughout the day, children snatched opportunities to work on activity books which taught them about the cultural diversity of countries within the European Union.

The Gleddings’ School Council and Healthy School Council

Electing the School Council

The Council is made up of 10 children from Form 2 – Upper 4 and they are elected by their class to represent them at the weekly School Council meetings.

The School Council Meeting

Each member discusses with pupils from their class what they want to change and then brings the suggestions to the meetings. Once it has been discussed, they then tell their class what has been decided and why.

Our School Council meets every Monday and our Healthy School Council meets every half term.

The ideas which are brought to the School Council benefit the school, the pupils and sometimes the teachers.

The right to have a say is very important on School Council but rights can also involve responsibility and being a School Councillor means having a big responsibility.

Involving Everybody!

It is very important that the views of all of the children are heard so we have suggestion boxes in all the classrooms to record ideas and views.

What will the School Council discuss?

We talk about everything from new suggestions for our menu to new lunchtime clubs. The important thing is that everybody has an opportunity to have their say.

Who are the Councillors?

Marisa and Marmaduke, our School Council Leaders, run the meetings and make sure that everyone gets involved. Our secretary takes the register and makes sure all the paperwork for the meeting is done and our treasurer looks after the money we receive from the uniform sales and makes sure we only spend money we have got. Together, and with the help of Anna, Elliot, Harriet, Dominic, Catherine, Isabella, Max, Kassim and Mae, they work hard to make sure everyone is kept informed about any decisions which have been made.

Mrs Choy and Mrs McHugh help by coming to the meetings and giving advice if needed.
